Hi, I am Rachel. I’m originally from England. My hometown is just outside of London and I have been living in China for about 3 years now so teaching at a high school and universities as well in China.
My full name is Tom Spenson Trusal Junior, and, but my friends call me TJ.
Umm…I think Chinese people to me are always very friendly and welcoming and always want to encourage me to try, try to take some special food or see interesting places. And, but of course there are some cultural differences between the east and the west. So I think, um maybe things, questions they ask me sometimes for me are a little strange and unexpected like asking me, Oh, are you married yet, and when I say no being surprised and often asking me about my salary or talking about my weight. Things like this, umm, I think in the west we will maybe not ask each other. But, of course the culture is different so for me.Sometimes it’s funny when I’m asked these sort of things.
American students are, we always ask questions, all the time. But with my students, not only do they not ask questions, but also, if I tell them to ask questions, they still don’t. When I first started teaching, I would ask, often ask my students, Do you understand? 你明白我说什么？and they’ll say 啊， 明白明白。But really they didn't understand. But I didn’t know that.
It took me a long time to realize I can not ask them if they understand, I have to test them, a little test, that I ask them questions about what we’re reading. I can’t just say do you understand. Because they almost, always say, Ah, I understand.
I think the main difference for me，would be having classes online is very convenient and also flexible, because the student is able to have the class at their convenience when they are on the move and if they are able to do it through their phone. It doesn't take so long as they traveling back and forth. And also the one and one aspects of online English,I think, is very good, because it's much easier for the teacher to focus on their students and to notice or pick up on any mistakes they have made.So
I think it is maybe better than a classroom situation where the twenty students where the teacher can’t focus on this one student in the same way.
No.1, the students that learn the quickest are the ones who ask questions. The one who asked the
most questions always learns the quickest. No.2, the students who learn the quickest, are the best at integrating material, so for instance, I have some students who take English with the Chinese teacher, and the one who learn something in their other classes and then talk about that, or try to use that in my class, they learn very quickly.
LEARNS English is a way to study English through online classes. And it's a very convenient and easy way to improve your English at your own convenience and in your own time. So LEARNS English is a way to make your life better.
It’s very convenient, I can using programs like SKYPE or QQ makes the communication process very quick because we can type to each other, and sometimes it might be necessary to use things like pinyin to make the translations very clear. And I also like LEARNS because there are a lot of opportunities to do things together with the students. For instance, we may go mountain climbing or maybe go to a restaurant and eat dumplings together, I think this is really cool because it is a lot use of establish our really interesting relationship between the teacher and the student. And I think it’s good because if you do this it makes learning a little bit more fun, and if we can make learning fun, it allows you to lose some of the inhibitions of learning a new language. If learning gets to be too boring, sometimes, maybe the students will be not very interested. So,yeah, I really like LEARNS. It’s very cool.
